The minister of labour and employment, Chris Ngige, has urged Nigerians to endure the
hike in the price of petrol, adding that the government action was influenced by the
need to reposition the economy into a productive one.
Speaking in Enugu when he visited the southeast regional office of the Nigeria Social
Insurance Trust Fund, (NSITF), the minister said the hike in the price of petrol would
help to revive the economy, Vanguard reports.

He said: “The Federal Government is not unaware of the hard times Nigerians are
passing through as a result of the re-structuring of the economy. The President is
genuinely concerned and personally feels the pains too. But this is a necessary phase
we must all endure for the restoration of better days.”
Meanwhile, the minister of state for petroleum, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, has been making
frantic efforts on behalf of the federal government to persuade the organised labour to
shun its plans to shut down the economy from Wednesday, May 18, should the
government fail to revert the pump price of petrol to the pre-May 11 price of N86.50,
by midnight of Tuesday, May 17.
In a related development, John Odigie-Oyegun, the national chairman of the All
Progressives Congress (APC) predicted on Friday, May 13, that the price of premium
motor spirit (PMS) is likely to crash, used drastic reduction in GSM services rates over
the years as an example.
He said the 2016 budget did not provide for subsidy, adding that the return of subsidy
could only divert resources from the crying needs of other sectors, including the
programme to help the poor Nigerians.
