FUEL PRICE HIKE: Nigerians must be ready to sacrifice for Positive change, says Tinubu

A leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress and former
Governor of Lagos, Bola Tinubu, has lent his voice to the
controversial removal of subsidy on fuel price, describing as
necessary if Nigeria must move on.

Mr. Tinubu, who had opposed the removal of the subsidy
under the administration of former President Goodluck
Jonathan, said subsidy was originally a good idea, but it had
since been “perverted”.
He, therefore, urged the government to divert the money
recoverable on subsidy to other social programmes and
infrastructure that would have more rewarding impacts on the
people.
Bola Tinubu assured Nigerians that the change agenda of
President Muhammadu Buhari is still on course.
According to Mr. Tinubu, the change process requires time
especially coming after “the conscience of our nation has been
under attack for many years.
“In a perfect world, I wish we could sanitize the subsidy regime
and thus continue (with) it. However, I have reached the
conclusion that there are too many demons in the system for
this hell to be converted into good earth let alone heaven,” he
said while speaking at the 10 memorial anniversary of left-
wing politician and scholar, Bala Usman, in Kaduna.
“I would choose to remove the subsidy and use the money to
help people – let us feed our school children, with our local
produce promote agriculture, create jobs and start erecting a
social safety net for the vulnerable among us in true need,” he
added.
“We were handed a way of governance in which anything goes
and too much went – as if gone with the wind. Our present was
squandered and future mortgaged”.
Mr. Tinubu while pleading for support and patience with the
APC administration said “Nigeria has the greatest opportunity
to get it right with a leader like Mr. Muhammad Buhari.”
“There is much to fix. President Buhari is committed to fixing
them. But he needs your support and patience. He cannot do it
all alone. We must stand beside him or else we may be
knocked down and not stand at all.
“Thus, let us be resolved to see reform and change that will
make Nigeria rise as the nation it should be,” Mr. Tinubu said
while speaking at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University
convocation in Sokoto on Saturday.
The former Lagos State governor also took on those he
described as “nay Sayers and negative spinners” who argue that
no change was taking place.
“It’s easy for those who are greedy to think that change is easy.
Change is not about comfort of today, but the success of
tomorrow. Nigeria was in the rollercoaster of losing hope. Then
our party brought cure. Don’t let anyone deceive you, the cure
is here”
